Advent Calendars

Advent Calendars Advent is the period of the years that immediately precedes Christmas (which marks the birth of Jesus Christ, and is celebrated in Western Christianity on December 25th.

In Christian tradition, Advent is considered a holy season, and is marked by churches and Christians generally. In Western Christianity, the Advent season begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas (and thus can begin between November 27th and December 3rd depending on the year), and is marked by religious services as well as Advent wreaths containing symbolic candles which are lit on each of the Sundays up to Christmas.

As well as Advent wreaths, another popular way of celebrating the Christmas season (often used by both Christians and in secular celebrations of Christmas) is Advent calendars. These typically contained numbered doors from 1 to 24, which can be opened on each in day in December up until Christmas Eve. Traditionally, behind each door is a small picture relevant to Christmas or Advent season, such as a picture depicting part of the nativity story, although nowadays many advent calendars instead contains sweets, chocolates or even small gifts.
